MetLife Moves, Finds New Home In Raleigh-Cary, NC

MetLife, Inc. a global life insurance, annuities, and employee benefits company is making an investment of $110 million and building a mega campus in Cary, NC. With over 90 millions customers in over 60 countries there is a good chance you either are using MetLife or know someone who is. As reported by the Triangle Business Journal, an email that was obtained by the New York Post from a high ranking MetLife executive indicates that there could be as many as 6,000 jobs moving from New York City to the Cary, NC campus.

So what does MetLife’s move mean for Raleigh, NC residents? 

MetLife has chosen the Raleigh-Cary area as it’s new home, and residents can expect a lot of new jobs, as 1,200 technology positions need to be filled. How many MetLife executives move to Cary is uncertain at this time, though original reports suggest the company is looking to hire local Cary residents. MetLife is receiving around 1,000 new resumes a week, 52,000 resumes total so far, and is still searching to fill another 800 positions. Salaries for the new technology campus are expected to be around $112,000/yr. With an already low rate of unemployment the hunt for talent becomes even more competitive in the Triangle. Raleigh is a technology hub with Research Triangle Park located nearby, so the fact MetLife chose Cary as a place to build it’s technology headquarters makes a lot of sense. The campus in Cary, is expected to house more than 1,200 employees and reports suggest the campus will officially open in mid-2015.  

What does the move to Raleigh mean for MetLife?

A less expensive location to operate, with better weather, as many of it’s 23,000 employees currently live in the Northeast. The move by the company suggests that it’s trying to reduce costs by moving to a more affordable city. The move to the Raleigh-Cary area also means that MetLife has access to a new pool of talent, with universities like Duke, University of North Carolina, and North Carolina State University offer great educational opportunities to their students. In fact MetLife has a page on it’s website dedicated to entry-level positions, for those seeking employment upon graduating. It’s no surprise MetLife and other companies are moving to the Raleigh-Durham area, especially companies that specialize in technology and medical research with Research Triangle Park being located in the area.
