Raleigh can't keep it's name off lists lately as the cities most recent award comes on the heels of it's fast growing tech scene. Raleigh is ranked number 6 on the Dell Future Ready Economies Model, coming in behind cities such as San Jose, San Francisco/Oakland, Washington D.C., Boston, and Austin.
"RALEIGH, N.C., NO. 6, is part of North Carolina’s Research Triangle, which includes major universities and technology companies. The region’s human capital score, particularly in the area of resident education, was well above the average of other cities. Its infrastructure more than compensated for a below-average commerce ranking, in part due to a very high score for its relatively uncongested highways." - Says the report about Raleigh.
Defining future readiness in three categories, the Dell Future Ready Economies Model looked specifically at the engagement and education of residents, innovation in commerce and government, and the state of the region's infrastructure. An additional 40 data points were used to determine the actual rankings.
Some of the other factors that helped to determine the rankings include open data initiatives, the city's internet accessibility, transportation, are both key elements of infrastructure. Bike paths are seen as environmentally friendly transportation and are a sign of future-ready communities. College degrees, percentage of voters, and number of people relocating all contributed to the report.
“The new city is about attracting people, and that's where the innovations come from,” said Karen Campbell, senior consultant at IHS Economics, which conducted the survey on behalf of Dell. “It's about getting a mix of people there who can bring new perspectives and new ideas.”The full list of cities that appeared on the report include:
- San Jose, California
- San-Francisco/Oakland, California
- Washington, D.C.
- Boston, Massachusetts
- Austin, Texas
- Raleigh, NC
- Seattle, Washington
- Denver, Colorado
